Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)
-
Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is a commonly prescribed treatment for menopausal symptoms that can provide significant relief and improve long-term bone and heart health. It is considered a suitable option for the majority of women, although individual risks and benefits should be discussed with a healthcare provider.
-
One of the advantages of HRT is that it can be started as early as the menopause transition (perimenopause). You don't have to wait until your symptoms become unbearable to consider this treatment. Even mild symptoms such as night sweats can significantly impact your sleep and daily well-being. By initiating HRT early, you can effectively manage these symptoms.
-
Taking HRT offers various benefits, including the alleviation of many menopausal symptoms, prevention of osteoporosis, and potential reduction of the risk of heart disease. If you experience premature menopause before the age of 40, it is particularly important to consider HRT until you reach the average age of menopause (around 51 in the UK). This can help protect against osteoporosis and heart disease.
-
When deciding whether to continue or discontinue HRT, it can be challenging to determine if your menopausal symptoms have fully settled. Unfortunately, there isn't a definitive test available for this purpose. If you decide to stop HRT and experience a resurgence of symptoms, there's no need to panic. You can consult with your doctor to discuss options, including potentially restarting HRT or exploring alternative treatments.
It is a personal decision that should be made in consultation with your healthcare provider, considering your unique circumstances and preferences.
Premature Ovarian Insufficiency
Menopause that occurs before the age of 40 is known as premature ovarian insufficiency (POI).
POI can be also referred to early ovarian failure and premature menopause. Some POI symptoms can be treated, and there are also methods and lifestyle habits to lessen the diseases and health risks that are related to POI.
